Antelope Island

Can you believe how close we could drive up to these beautiful animals?!!

In the middle of the enormous Salt Lake, there's an island you can get to by driving across a long causeway.  I took the kids there today for a spring break adventure.  My friend and her three kids came, too. (I had been once before, with D.H.)

I love Antelope Island; it reminds me of Scotland, especially the Isle of Lewis.  There are no trees and almost no buildings.  It's gorgeous, moody, windy, and wild.

At the visitor's center, we learned that the island's buffalo herd is the largest in America: 600. They descended from just 12 that were brought there originally.  We didn't see antelope but we saw many, many of the bison --and up close!!!  They were not afraid of or angry at our presence.  Just uninterested. So we drove close.

C.E. was scared at first.  Then she got out of the car.

My little A.J.

Beautiful little C.E.

The baby rode on my back most of the day.  Here he is with the hat over his eyes, and no one even noticed it.  He fell asleep like that.

This treeless, rolling island really reminds me of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.  (With bison instead of sheep.)

Love the colors.

Very interesting poster that was part of the visitor's center museum:  It was an invitation to join the very last buffalo hunt in the United States, which was held on Antelope Island.

It was sooo windy.  What an exhilirating place to visit.
